Being able to get around, and to move safely within your own home, is central to independence. For many people with disability, the barrier isn't ability, it's access. The NDIS funds a range of supports designed to close that gap, so you can get out into the community and move confidently at home.
Transport is one of the most practical supports the NDIS can fund. Reliable transport to appointments, work, study or social activities means you're not left waiting on family, friends or public transport that may not be accessible. It also opens the door to more spontaneous, everyday participation in community life, rather than everything needing to be carefully planned around a lift.
Home modifications, from a single grab rail to a fully accessible bathroom, remove day-to-day barriers that many people don't think about until they're living with them. Small changes can significantly reduce fall risk and the need for physical assistance, giving you back a level of independence in your own space.
Mobility aids, communication devices and other assistive technology can make an enormous difference to how freely someone moves, communicates and takes part in daily life. The right equipment, matched to the right person, is often the difference between needing constant support and being able to do things independently.
None of this happens by chance, it comes down to a plan that actually reflects how you want to live. If mobility and getting around is a barrier to your goals, it's worth raising directly at your next planning or review meeting.
